Gaisce

Gaisce 1

Gaisce is a personal development programme for young aged 15-25 to dream big and fulfil their potential. Everyone has a choice to take part in Gaisce and is led by Mrs. Hynes.

There are four Challenge Areas of Gaisce:

  • Regularly donate your time to a genuine cause for the required length of time
  • Meet the minimum time requirements
  • Show regular commitment, progress, and improvement in your chosen volunteer activity
  • Volunteer at least 1 hour a week
  • Undertake activities in your own time.

Personal Skill:

  • Take up a completely new activity or seek to improve your ability in an activity that you are already engaged in, that can be pursued for a period of time with set goals and targets
  • Meet the minimum time requirements, spending at least one hour per week on the Personal Skill activity.
  • Undertake activities in your own time.
  • Show regular commitment, progress, and improvement in your chosen skill.
  • Ensure that there is structure to the learning and a method of validating that (there is no requirement to pay for classes).

Physical Recreation:

  • Take up a completely new physical activity or seek to improve your ability in an activity that you are already engaged in, that can be pursued for a period of time with set goals and targets
  • Meet the minimum time requirements, spending at least one hour per week on the Physical Recreation activity.
  • Undertake activities in your own time.
  • Show regular commitment, progress, and improvement in your chosen activity.
  • Ensure that there is structure to the learning and a method of validating that (there is no requirement to pay for classes).

Adventure Journey:

  • The journey, with an agreed purpose, should be undertaken ideally in small teams of between four and ten people.
  • All the team members should be involved in the planning and preparation.
  • You must stay in a self-catering hostel, camping, or other suitable pre-approved form of accommodation, and you must cook at least one substantial meal per day.
  • The journey can take place on land or water. You can travel by your own physical efforts (foot, cycle, canoe, etc), by animal (horse, camel, etc) or by other non-motorised assistance (sail, etc).
  • You must source and transport all gear and equipment that they will require with them on the journey
  • The days on the adventure journey must be consecutive and must involve going directly from point to point. You must spend the entire specified period of time exclusively on the adventure journey.
  • All Adventure Journeys should be supervised and evaluated by the PAL or an Adventure Journey Supervisor
  • Each must be carried out over 26 weeks, 13 weeks and another 13 weeks but it’s your choice which length of time you use for Challenge Area.

As part as Gaisce, all TY’s went to Kilary and did a 17km walk the first day and a 9km walk the second day. This covered our adventure journey part of the award.

It’s always possible to go on and complete a Silver and Gold Gaisce award after completing the Bronze. Gaisce is a great achievement and a good thing to put on a CV.
